This comes from several directions. Remarkably, the utter ambiguity of the term transgender gets little to no attention.

On the site of the Transgender Network we read “who you are you tell yourself,” and in psychomedical Holland (as well as worldwide) it also appears that transgender is seen as a description of how a person judges their own gender, specifically as the condition of someone who judges or experiences their own gender differently than as “assigend at birth“. That is, gender identity differs from the gender assigned at birth.

A better term would be transgender identity. Either a transgender person is a person with a trans gender identity. Conveniently omitting the mention of “identity” creates permanent confusion that then leads to many accusations in different directions, and subsequent frustration and unhappiness. A petition against the harassment of transgender people in sports was canvassed last week. Understandable but also too brief.

The term transgender is too vague for this discussion, and the constant use of the term transgender in an infomercial sense from the medical psychology angle contributes to this. Actually, the use of the term transgender in the medical and psychological fields can only be understood if “woke” co-essentialism (see gender-theory.org/) were fully accepted there, but we do not assume that.

When discussing participation in a women’s darts competition, the starting point is a trans woman, say C, whom the organization allows to participate in a competition in the “for women” category based on principles of desired inclusion.

This trans woman has C female formal gender: “woman” is in her passport, the transition has actually taken place. Perhaps C currently has a male gender identity again, but that does not matter at least not for eligibility at the sporting event in question.

On the website of the Transgender Network, we see how this network assumes that those who say or think they have a female/male/neutral gender (have a female/male/neutral gender identity) also have female/male/neutral gender (in the sense of the transgender law desired by members of the Transgender Network) formally (in the sense of formal gender). The network embraces co-essentialism as if it were self-evident, quod non.

But this creates unsolvable problems for any sports federation, and surely the medics and psychologists, as well as the members of the Transgender Network, should blame themselves.

If it were the case that gender identity determines gender then that definitively does not speak for itself that every woman should be allowed to enter every competition for women. Everyone can see this, including every member of the Transgender Network and also every doctor and psychologist in the Netherlands. So what should sports associations do to properly organize the discourse that has been driven into the quagmire at the hands of others who use the jargon sloppily?

It would clarify matters when medics and pychologists do not call a person transgender solely and exclusively on the basis of gender identity (self-identification), and it would also improve the discussion if members of the Transgender Network would explain in clear terms how and with what language a sports association can make a candiate participant’s transition history count when evaluating a request to participate in competition.

As yet, we do not believe that the Transgender Network is representative of the transgender community. Those who have undergone a gender transition and are now seen as male or female on the basis of morphological gender (and thus are transgender in a classical sense) are visibly disadvantaged by a discourse in which even the language in which something like this is described is relegated to the background and in which none of that would matter.

In other words: C we see as victims of the way the transactivists conduct the debate and the extent to which medics and psychologists go along with it (consciously or unconsciously).

Jan Bergstra & Laurens BuijsAmsterdam Gender Theory Research Team In connection with the commotion over transgender participation in darts, much commentary is coming out on social media.
