Theoretical Sexology (TS)

Theoretical sexology
in more detail

We do not consider gender theory and particularly Formal Gender Theory (FGT) as part of sexology, nor theoretical sexology. Rather, we consider FGT as one of the tools that can find application within theoretical sexology. We will examine such applications in detail, initially focusing on the theory of sexual orientation. Our work takes up the remarkable article What is sexual orientation (2016) by Robin Dembroff as a starting point. Our use of Dembroff is not so much based on agreement with the conclusions of that article. However, Dembroff (2016) did demonstrate in remarkable detail and depth how gender theory can be applied to the theory of sexual orientation. We differ from Dembroff in our perspective on gender theory, but we are very much in agreement on what the application of theoretical work might look like, and Dembroff (2016) provides a paradigmatic example of how that might be done.
